The dLibra platform consists of six specialized servers, creating together a complex digital library system. Using dLibra client applications, the user can store digital objects of any type - text (PDF, DjVu, HTML, etc.), images, audio or video. All stored objects can be precisely described with an adjustable set of metadata attributes. Sophisticated mechanisms supporting creation of the metadata have been implemented, including dictionaries of attribute values with thesaurus functionality. dLibra supports many well known standards like MARC, RDF and DublinCore, which are used for metadata exchange. The content stored in a dLibra–based digital library is available through WWW pages, generated by the dLibra framework. These web pages allow to easily browse and search all digital collections of a given digital library. Access to all stored data is controlled by one of the dLibra servers.

dLibra is a digital library framework developed in Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (Poznan, Poland) since 1999. It is used as a software platform in one of the largest Polish digital libraries - in the Digital Library of Wielkopolska Region (WBC, http://www.wbc.poznan.pl/), which now consists of more than 5000 various publications. dLibra was also deployed for Wroclaw University of Technology Digital Library (BCPWr, http://dlib.bg.pwr.wroc.pl/). Startup of five another dLibra based academic and regional digital libraries is planned for the nearest future. In our presentation we want to describe, how we use OAI-PMH protocol to allow distributed metadata search across all dLibra installations in Poland. This feature of the dLibra framework is in a prototype phase now, but we are planning to deploy it in all dLibra-based digital libraries in next few months. This will be the first step in creation of the integrated platform of Polish digital libraries.

One of the main focus areas of the PIONIER: Polish Optical Internet program was the development and verification of pilot services and applications for the information society. It was necessary to create a base for new developments in science, education, health care, natural environment, government and local administration, industry and services. Examples of such services are digital libraries, allowing to create multiple content and metadata repositories which can be used as a basis for the creation of sophisticated content-based services. In this paper we are presenting the current state of digital library services in the PIONIER network, we shortly describe dLibra - a digital library framework which is the software platform for the majority of PIONIER digital libraries. We also introduce two content-based services enabled on PIONIER digital libraries: distributed metadata harvesting and searching and virtual dynamic collections.

The national programme “PIONIER - Polish Optical Internet -Advanced Applications, Services and Technologies for the Information Society” was started in Poland in 2001. One of its main objectives was to enrich the content-based services in Polish NREN. In order to reach this goal a platform composed of several digital library installations have been started up. PIONIER digital libraries use the OAI-PMH protocol to perform periodic metadata synchronization. As a result each digital library has full information about all the metadata from all other digital libraries. Each digital library uses the metadata to provide its users with advanced content and metadata based services such as distributed metadata search and virtual dynamic collections.
